Memorial Day may be an American holiday, but it’s more than just a weekend for mattress sales and barbecues!
For us, Memorial Day is in addition to Veteran’s Day, which we celebrate in November. Other countries celebrate their war heroes in November as well, harking back to the armistice at the conclusion of World War One. Belgium still refers to November 11 as Armistice Day, and England calls it Remembrance Day. Also in November, Germany celebrates its fallen war heroes with Volkstrauertag. (I’ll have to ask my German-speaking friends to translate that for me!)
One of the few dates similar to our May Memorial Day is in the Netherlands with Dodenherdenking – “remembrance of the dead.”
It’s so important for us to remember the sacrifices of others, especially those who gave their lives.
To celebrate this holiday, I’m offering my newly re-released First World War ebook for free, Pieces of Silver. This is the first of a two-book series, followed by Remember Me. Both novels are a tribute to America in my own small way, which is why I’m so excited about re-releasing them.
Pieces of Silver originally released more than a decade ago, but after receiving back the rights I revisited the content with a thorough spit and polish. Despite the new cover, the characters and plot remain true to the original, although it’s been tightened with an edit I just loved doing. Since the price is right this weekend, you can let me know if you like the update!
If you’re firing up the barbecue in the next few days, send up a thought for all those who gave so much for us to enjoy the freedom we have.
Happy Memorial Day!
