This past week I had the privilege of visiting with a group of people at the Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church. Their group is called “55 and Better” — and I was told if you’re over 55, so much the better. Since I’ll soon be approaching that age myself, I found it easy to fit right in!
Beside that, it’s nice to venture beyond the confines of my office once in a while. Like many writers, I’m an introvert, but every once in a while even I like to get out and meet new people.
These are a few of the members of the group, some of the “regulars” from the community around the church. Well, except for the lovely (and young!) Julie Scudder-Dearyan, who is the group’s organizer. It was Julie who arranged for my visit, and Julie who made this fun poster for me, highlighting my recent book covers.
My youngest son was so excited when he came home from school that day and saw the poster. Wow! You made a poster for when you visit my classroom? Cool!
I had to confess it was actually a gift from the 55 and Better group, but with a slight revision the poster will serve us well when I visit my son’s class for Career Day in a couple of weeks. A two-fer! (Two purposes for one poster. 🙂
Being invited to churches, schools or clubs to share my experiences and the inspiration behind various books I’ve written is definitely a favorite perk. For the 55 and Better group, I came with my laptop full of pictures from the research trip to Belgium and Northern France that I took last fall. What could be better than presenting what’s basically a slide show? I was able to chat with everyone about the history behind Look To The East, and lots of interesting facts about the First World War and the impact it left in that area of the world. (If you’re interested in seeing many of the pictures I showed, just go back to the posts from the fall of 2008 on this blog.)
Check in next week and I’ll tell you about my upcoming visit to my publisher’s office. Yes, after a winter of isolation I’m finally getting out again — some of you know I’m one of the two founding members of a Hermit’s Club, but let’s face it, God didn’t create us to stay cooped up forever!
