I know many writers who write every day—or close to it, at least when they’re under a deadline. Others have “real” jobs during the week so weekends hold marathon writing days for them. For me, since my family is home with me, weekends are days I spend trying to catch up on things around here. You know, the fun stuff like laundry and errands and vacuuming. And the real fun stuff like going to a movie or taking the dog to the dog park.
But on some Saturdays, when things are going well with my work-in-progress, I can sometimes find a little time to write. I used to be far more picky about conditions for writing, although since I’m what my friend Allie Pleiter would call a “big chunk” writer (ask her about it if you see her!) I’m probably still pickier than most. I’m a morning person, so I tend to have more creativity and energy in the early hours. I still prefer writing early in the day, but I’ve learned I can write in the evenings, too. I used to prefer everything to be quiet around me, but as I’m writing this my husband is here in our study with me, and he’s sharing the things he’s finding on an Internet vacation search for next summer (we like to plan ahead!).
I do, however, still need a table top computer, my favorite chair, my familiar desk in my own little corner of my study. I tend to write for longer periods of time than many people, so comfort and familiarity seem important to me.
Sunday is the only day of the week I don’t write. I think we can follow God’s example and take a day for rest and rejuvenation any day of the week, but with a family Sunday seems to be the best day for me.
Monday morning is my absolute favorite day of the week, though—because I know I have a whole week ahead of me to do what I was wired to do. Write!
So check back with me on Monday as my writing journal continues.
